In recent years Tri-Angle Records has helped cultivate a crop of hermetic young producers sprouting up around the world who specialize in grafting elements of hip hop and R&B into barren electronic soundscapes. Dagger Paths, Forest Swords' haunting 2010 debut EP, was among the label’s most rewarding and acclaimed early releases, but in spite of the EP's success, its creator, a producer from the UK countryside by the name of Matthew Barnes, remained in obscurity as he battled tinnitus and focused on his day job as a graphic designer. On last year’s Engravings, his full length debut, he finally emerged from his dormancy with a more refined take on the murky melancholy of his early work. Much as an engraving is traced onto a flat surface with the intention of using it to create prints, Engravings carves something remarkable out of an unremarkable existence and will likely leave a lasting impression on all who hear it. For the first half of this excellent double bill, Dutch producer Lemontrip will set the mood with his atmospheric blend of post-dubstep vibes and hip hop beats, which should appeal to fans of kindred spirits like Balam Acab and Nosaj Thing.
